Candidate should be a Graduate in Law from the recognized Universities in the Indian Union and recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as Advocate or Attorney of an Indian Court.

General Information:
- Candidate should be a Graduate in Law (under 10+2+3+3 or 10+2+5 pattern) from the recognized Universities in the Indian Union and recognized by the Bar Council of India for admission as Advocate or Attorney of an Indian Court.
- Candidates who have passed all his/her Examinations, while studying law, within the duration of their course are alone eligible to apply.
- Candidates who have obtained his/her Law Degree during the academic years 2016- 2017 and 2017-2018, are only eligible to apply for the assignment as Law Clerk to the Hon’ble Judges.
- Candidates pursuing Post Graduate Degree in Law or any other Degrees or Programmes requiring their compulsory attendance elsewhere are not eligible to apply for the assignment as Law Clerk.
- Selected Candidates will be posted either in the Principal Seat at Madras or at Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, Madurai and are also liable to be transferred vice versa in case of administrative exigencies.
- Law Clerks will be adhoc appointees and their engagement shall be initially for a period of one year from the date of their taking up their assignment, which may be extended for a further period of not exceeding one more year, subject to the approval of the Hon’ble The Chief Justice or the Committee nominated by the Hon’ble The Chief Justice.
- However, the assignment of any Law Clerk may be discontinued even before the completion of one year, without notice.
- The Candidates should join their assignment of Law Clerk within the period specified in their order of appointment. No request for extension of time for joining the assignment of Law Clerk will be entertained, under any circumstances.
- Law Clerk shall not be treated or deemed to be a regular employee in the Madras High Court Service.
- Any Law Clerk intending to leave the assignment as Law Clerk within a period of one year, shall give prior notice of three months to the Registry and under prior intimation to the Hon’ble Judge to whom he/she attached.
- If he/she has been removed or suspended from its roll by the Bar council or was found guilty of professional misconduct by the Bar Council under the provisions of Advocates Act, 1961 (Central Act 25 of 1961) or orders of the court or Judicial forum.
- If any disciplinary proceedings or penalty or punishment has been imposed or contemplated by the Bar Council or any Disciplinary authority or Court, which in the opinion of the Hon’ble High Court, renders him/her unsuitable for appointment in Judicial Service,
- If he/she has been temporarily or permanently debarred or disqualified by the High Court or the Union Public Service Commission or any State Public Service Commission or any other Recruitment Agency, Board or Commission from appearing for examinations/interview or selections conducted by it,
- The eligible candidates will have to appear for viva voce test at Chennai.
- No TA/DA will be paid to the candidates for attending the viva voce.
- Candidates are required to take a printout of the Application Form from the Official website of the Madras High Court (www.hcmadras.tn.nic.in) and submit their applications duly signed with full particulars.
- Except the Application Form hosted in the official website of the Madras High Court, no other application form should be made use of by the candidates.
- Candidates should enclose self attested copies of all Educational Certificates including the statement of marks obtained in Law Degree.
- Candidates should not send Original Testimonials.

- The High Court of Judicature at Madras, one of the three High Courts in India established at the Presidency Towns by Letters Patent granted by Her Majesty Queen Victoria, bearing date 26th June 1862, is the highest Court in the State of Tamil Nadu, exercising Original Jurisdiction over the City of Madras and Appellate Jurisdiction over the entire State as well as extra-ordinary Original Jurisdiction, Civil and Criminal, under the Letters Patent and Special Original Jurisdiction for the issue of writs under the Constitution of India.
- The Hon`ble The Chief Justice is the Head of the Judiciary with powers of administration of the High Court and of the Administration of Justice throughout the State. The Hon’ble Chief Justice is in charge of the general policy adopted in the Administration of Justice. The administration of Justice in the Civil and Criminal Courts in the districts constituted under the Civil Courts Act and the Code of Criminal Procedure respectively is carried on by the following categories of Judicial officers.
