General Information:
- The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore invites applications through online & offline mode for engagement the following purely on contractual basis to work under NMCG project at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore as per details given below .
- Only Indian citizens are eligible for appearing in the online interview.
- All candidates, irrespective of their choice for offline and online interview, must send the prescribed application form to interviewcifri@gmail.com. Candidates must mention their choice of mode of interview i.e. offline or online. None will be allowed to appear in the interview unless he/ she sends duly filled in prescribed application form to the said email.
- Candidates are required to send scanned copies of application addressed to the Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, attached with detailed bio-data, affixed with recent passport size photograph and copies of self-attested certificates in support of age, qualifications, experience, testimonials and other credentials to interviewcifri@gmail.com within 05:00 PM on 14.12.2020. All applications received after the mentioned time limit will be summarily rejected. List of the candidates who are eligible for Offline/ Online Interview will be published on Institute’s website on 16.12.2020. Eligible candidates will also be informed through email.
- No TA/DA will be paid to the candidates.
- Candidates who are already working/ or in similar positions should produce no objection certificate obtained from their employer/ supervisor at the time of interview.
- Minimum 21 years and maximum age limit as on the date of interview is 45 years. Age relaxations for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates are as per rule.
- The selected candidates will be stationed at Barrackpore or at project sites as required from time to time and will have to conduct extensive field work involving frequent travel, laboratory works and survey of different sites for sample collection.
- Selected Candidate (s) will be required to produce all original documents at the time of Joining.
- The selected candidates shall have not right/claim for regular appointment at ICAR-CIFRI at any point of time.
- In view of COVID-19 Pandemic, Strict Social Distancing norms will be followed. No candidate will be allowed to enter ICAR-CIFRI campus without mask.
- The Director’s decision will be final and binding on all aspects.

- India has vast and varied types of inland fisheries resources in the form of rivers, estuaries, reservoirs, floodplain wetlands, lakes, coastal lagoons and backwaters, which play important roles in fish production in the country, ensuring food and nutritional security, employment generation and livelihoods to millions of people. Recognizing the role of inland fisheries, Government of India established a Central Inland Fisheries Research Station at Calcutta on 17 March 1947, under the then Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Later, in 1959, the Central Inland Fisheries Research Station was elevated to a full-fledged research institute, christened as “Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute”.In 1967 it came under the administration of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Agriculture (currently Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare), New Delhi.
- The Institute strives for knowledge-based management of inland open waters for sustainable fisheries, conservation of aquatic biodiversity, integrity of ecological services and to derive social benefits from these waters. Headquarters of the Institute is located at Barrackpore, West Bengal; the Regional Research Centers are located at Allahabad, Guwahati, Bangalore and Vadodara, with Research Centers at Kochi and Kolkata.

- India has vast and varied inland fisheries resources in the form of rivers, estuaries, reservoirs, floodplain wetlands, lakes, ponds, etc. These resources play an important role in fish production of the country, ensuring food and nutritional security as well as employment generation especially in rural areas. Besides, this sector is an important source of livelihood to a sizable section of the country’s rural populace. Recognizing the role of inland fisheries, Government of India established a Central Inland Fisheries Research Station on 17 March 1947 at Kolkata under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Latter this research station was elevated to a full-fledged “Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute” in 1959 and it moved to its own building at Barrackpore, West Bengal. In 1967 the institute came under the administrative control of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi.
- In 1971 four All India Coordinated Research Projects, viz., “Composite Fish Culture”, “Riverine Fish Seed Prospecting”, “Air-breathing Fish Culture” and “Ecology and Fisheries Management of Reservoirs” were started by the institute. Another AICRP on “Brackishwater Fish Farming” was initiated in 1973. The first two projects were combined together as Composite Fish Culture and Fish Seed Production” in 1974. These AICRPs were turning points in the history of inland fisheries and aquaculture in India. The resounding success of these projects has given a firm support for the development of freshwater aquaculture in the country.
