General Information:
- CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, established in 1958, is the apex R&D institute for mechanical engineering and allied disciplines under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which is an Autonomous Body under the Government of India. The present priority areas of research of the institute are: Advanced Design and Analysis; Robotics & Mechatronics, Advanced Manufacturing and Metrology, Electronics & Embedded Systems, Drives & Control; Near Netshape Manufacturing, Micro-Systems Technologies; Precision Farm Machinery; Advanced Functional Materials, Tribology; Product and Process design, Renewable Energy Technologies.
- A Walk-in-interview will be conducted at CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur at the above address during 23rd — 24th September, 2019 to select candidates for engagement as Project–SRF/JRFIProject Assistant Level-WI/Ill/Field Assistant under various projects. The selected candidates will have opportunity of hands on training/exposure of working under different R&D projects at state of the art Laboratories. The vacancy position may vary either way even across the disciplines and projects.
- Actual number of positions may vary on the date of the Walk-In-Interview. Tenure mentioned above may be extended. In any case, it is co-terminus with the project or till such time this requirement exists whichever is earlier.
- The candidates who have already served CSIR-CMERI or any other Lab./lnstt. of CSIR as a Trainee I Project Assistant / Project Fellow / JRF / SRF / Research Associate etc. for a period of 5 years or more are not eligible for the above engagements. The candidates who have served for a period less than 5 years, upon selection, their tenure will automatically end on completion of five years.
- The date for determining the upper age limit, qualification and/or experience etc. will be the date of interview of the respective Post Code. Relaxation in age limit of the candidates belonging to SC/STIOBC and Women shall be provided as per the Government rules.
- The interested candidates may appear before the Selection Committee with all their original certificates, mark sheets with a self attested photo copy of each of it and a recent passport size photograph along with the filled-in Application Form available in the Institute website, as per the date and time given below. No TA/DA will be paid for attending the Walk-In-Interview. The Selection process may continue till late evening/next day, Candidates are advised to come prepared accordingly.
- If it is found at any stage of the process or thereafter that the candidates do not fulfill the eligibility criteria, their candidature shall be cancelled without assigning any reason whatsoever. Further, the decision of CSIR-CMERI in regard to the selection process will be final and binding to all concerned. No correspondence in this regard will be entertained by the Institute.
- Offer of engagement of the selected candidates will be issued subject to availability of fund and approval of the Competent Authority. Tenure mentioned in the advertisement is tentative and liable to be curtailed/extended as per decision of the Competent Authority.
- Candidates who are presently engaged in any Project either in CSIR-CMERI or any other Labs/Institute of CSIR, should produce the NOC for his/her appearing for the Walk-In-Interview from Competent Authority, failing which, they will not be allowed to appear in the interview.

- The Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (also known as CSIR-CMERI Durgapur or CMERI Durgapur) is a public engineering research and development institution in Durgapur, West Bengal, India. It is a constituent laboratory of the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).This institute is the only national level research institute in the field of mechanical engineering in India.
- The CMERI was founded in February 1958 under the endorsement of the CSIR. It was founded to develop national mechanical engineering technology, particularly in order to help Indian industries. During its first decade, the CMERI mainly focused its efforts towards national technology and import substitution. Currently, the Institute is making R&D efforts in the front-line areas of research such as Robotics, Mechatronics, Microsystem, Cybernetics, Manufacturing, Precision agriculture, Embedded system, Near net shape manufacturing and Biomimetics. Besides conducting research, the Institute works towards different R&D based mission mode programs of country to provide suitable technological solutions for poverty alleviation, societal improvement, energy security, food security, aerospace, mining, automobile and defense.
- CMERI has one office campus and three residential campuses in Durgapur. Office campus spans in an area of 81 acres with more than 16 buildings. The campus is located 7.80 kilometers from Durgapur railway station and 1.6 kilometers from Durgapur City Center. The campus is adjacent to National Institute of Technology, Durgapur and National Power Training Institute, Durgapur. An extension center of CMERI, Durgapur is situated in Bardhaman District, an industrial town of West Bengal.
- Three residential campuses extended over 72 acres of land and has civic amenities like Staff Quarters, Scientist Apartments, Children Park, Health Center, Staff Club, Guest Houses, Executive Hostels, Academic Hall of Residence, Dispensary, Market, Gymkhana and Schools. Kendriya Vidyalaya is situated inside the campus for providing the education from primary to higher secondary students and meant mainly for ward of the employees. A state-funded free primary school named Shishu Bani is also available in the campus to serve the educational need of nearby poor people. The institute also runs a free children computer training center named CSIR Kids’ i-zone, which is situated in the colony campus.
- The CMERI has developed as many as many products and processes, out of which 26 have been awarded prestigious national awards. The CMERI has filed more than 100 patents. Over 120 licensees have learned from the institute’s products and processes for commercial exploitation.
- During 1956-1962, Man Mohan Suri, the then Director of CMERI, has developed a novel concept of an integrated power pack involving reverse-governing techniques for the diesel engine superimposed on a hydro-mechanical transmission called Suri-Transmission.This has resulted in substantially increasing the efficiency of diesel locomotives. Suri-Transmission and its improvements are covered by 36 patents in 11 major countries.
