General Instruction:
- Applications are invited for a junior research fellow (JRF) position in the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Ropar under the SERB sponsored project titled “Spatial stress correlations in strong colloidal gel and its connection to yielding/plasticity”. The overall objective of the project is to numerically investigate the mechanical properties and yielding in colloidal gel systems using open source molecular dynamics simulation package ‘’LAMMPS’’.
- Master’s degree in Chemical/ Biochemical/ Petroleum/ petrochemical/ Polymer Engineering or Technology or a Master’s degree by Research in Chemical/ Biochemical/ Petroleum/ petrochemical/ Polymer Engineering or Technology with a GATE or CSIR UGC NET qualified score. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 CGPA) (55% marks or 6.0 CGPA for SC/ST) in their Master’s. Deserving candidates will be considered for PhD admissions at a later stage if they meet all the institute requirements.
- Experience in numerical simulation/ solid mechanics/ colloidal systems/ rheology/ soft matter will be an added advantage.
- The position is for two years in total. However, it will be given initially for one year which can be extended for further one year based on the evaluation of the performance by the principal investigator.
- A consolidated salary of Rs. 31000 / month will be provided as per the DST norms.

- IIT Ropar is on a fascinating path of growth and development. As you are aware, it has already established itself as one of the top technological institutes in the country, but that is just the tip of the iceberg compared to the huge initiatives and progress the institute is making. The institute’s own campus on 500 acres pristine land, on the bank of river Satluj is fast getting ready to be operational. We are going to occupy the first phase of the campus within the next quarter. The institute has increased its student strength from a meager 650 in 2015 to over 1100 today which is likely to be increased to 2500 by 2019.
- Our faculty strength has increased during the last two years from 65 to 115. We are expecting this to increase to 250 by 2019. Apart from existing departments of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, we have recently started the department of Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering. We have expanded our Post Graduate Programmes (M.Tech) to the domains of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. IIT Ropar has got a very strong basic science component with MSc. degrees being taught in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics department. We have also started MTech programme in Biomedical Engineering offered by Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME). PhD programme is one of the major strength of IIT Ropar with approximately 25% of the student strength being PhD research scholars. The research is a major focus of IIT Ropar which is evident from the fact that we have got the highest scientific citations per paper among all the new IITs, which is an indicator of high quality of research done here.
- The excellence in teaching and research comes from the careful choice of faculty members in which IIT Ropar has not made any compromise. It has gone to outreach and fetch scholars from all over the world to enrich its faculty strength and quality. This year, we have introduced the newly designed curriculum which is based on the principle of more hands on experience with strong fundamentals offering more choices to the students and imbibing social and national commitments in them. IIT Ropar has expanded its outreach to industry and the best academic institution in the world by entering into active collaborations with them. Research collaboration is not an additional feather in our cap but an integral part of our growth strategy.
- Recently IIT Ropar has adopted a new mission and vision for the institute according to which we want to become a leader among the institutes established in the new millennium. We have made a stunning beginning but there is a long way to go but I am sure, with the active cooperation of all our stakeholders, students, faculty, staff, employees, collaborators, parents of the students, governmental organizations, media and public at large, we will be able to fulfill the motto of IIT Ropar,
- IIT Ropar community has undertaken an important exercise of developing the Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan for the coming years. The exercise was carried out in active consultation with Indian Institute of Management Calcutta who have got technical expertise in this area. A participative bottom up approach was followed in formulating the Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan. Inputs from the entire IIT Ropar fraternity, MHRD, Board of Governors, Alumni and Industries were considered in the process. Finally we have arrived at the following Motto, Mission and Vision statements for our institute.
